  • Stud Frame, often called “stick built” is the traditional method used in most homes. Vertical studs, typically spaced 16” to 24” apart, covered with structural sheathing, form the walls and carry the load of the roof and upper floors. It is common for the roof to be “stick framed” or “truss built”. Because the weight is distributed through the walls, stud frame buildings require a continuous foundation. This system makes it easy to place windows and doors, insulate, finish with drywall, and apply multiple siding options.
  • Post Frame, sometimes known as “pole barn style” uses larger structural posts or laminated columns that are set into the ground or anchored to concrete foundations or piers. These posts are spaced farther apart – often 8-12 feet – and carry the entire load of the roof. The roof is typically truss style. Post frame doesn’t require a full foundation, but full foundations have become more popular for eliminating wood to ground contact, especially in higher end buildings and barndominiums. Post frame buildings typically have metal roofing and siding and do not require structural sheathing, however sheathing can be added to allow for more siding and roofing options.
